What causes a candle to smoke? How do I fix it?

Jade: Hi Michelle!

Hi there, Michelle! This is a great question for people who want to become candle burning pros. There are several reasons that your candle smokes when it burns. Some of the main causes are listed below:

• Your wick is too long
• The candle has been burning for too long
• The candle is in an improper container

Do any of these sound like you? If so, there are easily solutions to each of these problems. Remember, the most important thing about burning candles is safety. If you follow these simple tips your candle will smoke less, and you’ll be safer too. 

Wick Length

If you know Jackpot, then you know I always advise that you trim your wick to about ¼” before every burn. This is why! If you don’t you end up with too much wick during your burn. The flame can burn too high and become unstable. Trim your wicks!

Only Burn for Four Hours at a Time

The longest you should ever burn your candle for is 4 hours. After that, carbon forms on the candle wick and can cause it to mushroom. Besides smoking, a candle that burns for too long can get too hot to handle and cause a fire hazard. 

Decorative Containers

You may have placed your candle in a vase, lantern, or other container to add ambiance. If you did and the candle is smoking, check to make sure the container is large enough. The candle could be burning the sides.

I bet you’re not the first person to wonder how candles got so popular. They started out as a vital light source, and now they’re a luxury item the world can’t live without! With different sizes, scents, and colors there is a candle out there for everyone. These wax wonders have evolved into:

• a favorite home décor item
• a source of comfort via your sense of smell
• a self-care tool

Whether you buy candles for decorations, to help you meditate, or because you want to make your space smell amazing, candles are an obsession-worthy item that is always in demand.

There are several reasons that candles have become such a big deal in home décor and in our hearts. 

One reason people love candles so much is that is the variety of all natural candle waxes that are available, like Jackpot’s 100% soy wax. Besides the fact that natural candles are higher quality, candles made with sustainable materials that are environmentally friendly are better for the planet, and feel better to buy, too! 

Another reason that candles are so popular is the number of different scents that are available now. As scented candles get more popular, candlemakers create a larger variety of amazing fragrances. That’s a pretty great system, right?
